What is “friendship evangelism?”

“Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8

The apostle Paul wrote these words to Thessalonian Christians.  Paul and Silas had developed a deep and meaningful relationship with these dear friends as they lived among them. But their departure from Thessalonica had been abrupt. Now, as Paul writes to his friends, he uses very intimate language to describe their relationship. “We did not use flattery,” he says, but “we were gentle.” “You became so dear to us.” He calls them "brothers and sisters," and refers also to the relationship between nursing mothers and children. He longs to see them again and makes "every effort" to do so. This relationship is close, deep, and intimate.

Clearly these words do not describe a manipulative relationship, one in which Paul's only goal was to proselytize. There is more here. We see a mutually beneficial relationship that strengthens and encourages all involved. The Spirit had used their shared experiences to bind them in love, and Paul continues to draw strength from his friends even after he is gone.

“Friendship evangelism” seeks to create such a relationship, one in which we might share not only the Gospel, but our very lives as well.

Where do you see opportunities to develop these types of relationships in your life? Here is a prayer for you to say as you step out into your communities (taken from our 2025 Prayer Book). May God hear these words and bless your relationships to his glory!

Dear Jesus,

We are so blessed that you call us friends. We see your divine nature reflected in true friendship. Friendship involves sacrifice, humility, wisdom, patience, grace, and joy. We thank you for being our true friend and Redeemer. Lord, as we go forth into the world, bless our new relationships in your name. Give us new opportunities and connections in our communities, families, and workplaces. May we be intentional in these relationships. Give us new boldness to love as you loved, serve as you served, and pray as you prayed. And may the Spirit work, as he always does, when your Word goes forth. We work while it is day, and we rest knowing that you hold all things.

In your gracious name, we pray,

Amen
